Astigmatism: "Have I got rugby ball shaped eyes?"
Astigmatism refers to the curvature of your cornea. You don’t really have eyes which look like rugby balls.
But to help you better understand astigmatism, imagine cutting a rugby ball in half from tip to tip & placing the flat side of the cut ball on the ground. There are 2 curves, the long one from the one tip to the other tip. The other is “across” the narrower side of the ball. The “tip to tip” curve is flatter than the “across” the ball curve. The difference between the 2 curves is your astigmatism.
Almost everyone has some astigmatism & it often occurs with myopia or hyperopia.

Astigmatism causes blurred vision for near & distant objects. Glasses with astigmatism correction have to be “spot on” & a new pair of glasses can be difficult to get used to. Correcting astigmatism with contact lenses can be difficult because the lenses change position as you blink, changing your focus with each blink.
Astigmatism can be treated with laser eye surgery or intraocular lens exchange. The laser gently reshapes the cornea into a sphere (like a football shape) & a lens implant compensates for the oval shape.
