DYSFUNCTIONAL LENS SYNDROME (DLS)
Are you experiencing the effects of ageing on your vision? Lens replacement, or refractive lens exchange, could help to turn back the years. Lens replacements are usually the best for you if you are aged over 50. If you are younger then laser eye surgery or phakic lens implants are often a better option.
As we age the lens inside our eyes changes. Our vision is fairly stable and clear for many years, usually until our 40s, when reading in poor light may become difficult and later on, we may even struggle in good light. Then our distance vision becomes blurred and driving at night is more difficult. We need glasses for reading and doing anything nearby; eventually, we may need glasses for driving and distance vision for the first time. Or if we're short-sighted, we start taking our glasses off to read.
This progressive deterioration is called Dysfunctional Lens Syndrome, or DLS. The lens in our eyes becomes less flexible and adaptable, and less clear. Ask us to show you your lens clarity on your Pentacam scan.
There is a procedure that can challenge this process and reduce the impact of ageing on your vision. It’s called lens replacement, or refractive lens exchange, and we offer the treatment here at Laser Eye Surgery Birmingham.
ADVANCED EYE ANALYSIS
We will carry out an advanced analysis of your eyes. This is a detailed, state-of-the-art eye examination using a number of advanced technologies to measure and assess the health of your eyes at your consultation and to assess their future health. We will review your test results, assess your eye health, decide if you are suitable for treatment and discuss the best options with you. Suitability for lens replacement treatment is important – the stronger the candidate, the more likely we are to see a good result.
The advanced eye analysis technology includes the following scans (others are available if needed):
The 3D Maestro OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
The state-of-the-art Maestro OCT takes 50,000 high definition scans per second with the latest Fourier domain technology, to produce 3D images of your retina and other eye structures. This data is then analysed to assess the health of your eye.
The advanced technology Lenstar LS900 measures your corneal, lens and retinal thickness and takes other important measurements of each eye to an accuracy of as little as 2/1000 of a millimetre. These precise measurements are used in the latest formulae to calculate the lens power for each of your eyes. One complete scan of your eye takes 15 seconds.
Orbscan topography scanner
The Orbscan topography system scans your cornea (the surface window of the eye) and captures nearly 10,000 data points within a few seconds. A map-like display of your cornea is created, which is similar to a topographical map of a hill and shows the surface power, thickness, front and back shape of the cornea.
This device is similar to the Orbscan and confirms the Orbscan measurements. It can also display the dysfunctional changes in your natural lens so that you can see them for yourself.
Mark will examine your eyes and then discuss the best treatment option for you based on the examination, the scans, your lifestyle and your visual needs. An IOL (lens) is then chosen personally for you, suited to what you need from your vision. Some new lenses provide focus for near, intermediate and far objects, and also correct astigmatism. After lens replacement surgery you cannot develop a cataract.
Advanced Eye Analysis takes about 90 minutes and is not painful, and you will have a thorough eye examination.
TREATING DYSFUNCTIONAL LENS SYNDROME
The good news is that refractive lens exchange can treat your dysfunctional lens. Other treatments such as laser eye surgery can reduce the effects of DLS, however the only permanent solution is to replace your own lens with an advanced optic lens. This restores different focal points of the eye and improves the light transmission of the lens. Your own lens is softened and gently removed with an ultrasound instrument. The procedure is painless and takes about 10 minutes.
The latest intraocular lenses such as the Finevision, SBL3, Zeiss AT Lisa, Symfony, toric and other lenses have transformed hundreds of thousands of people's lives and they can now drive and read without glasses. The results may not be perfect, but the right lens in the right patient gives excellent results and can give you the vision you want for the way you live.
Many of our patients here at Laser Eye Surgery Birmingham are now enjoying the benefits of lens replacement surgery, so why not find out if this treatment could give you a new outlook on the world?
