FROM MARK WEVILL (MBChB, FCS (SA), FRCSEd, CertLRS, PgDipCRS):
I decided that restoring sight was the field I wanted to specialise in when I was doing eye surgery in a remote, rural hospital in South Africa in 1991. Patients who had been blinded by their cataracts sang and danced when I took the bandages off their eyes and they could see again!
I was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1995 and recognised as a Specialist in ophthalmology by the UK's General Medical Council. I started doing refractive surgery (surgery to correct focus errors of the eye) with LASIK laser eye surgery in 1996 and I have now done over 20 000 laser eye surgery operations. I am now a Consultant surgeon working with an experienced team of highly trained colleagues. We have worked together for up to 12 years and are constantly updating our skills and knowledge. We know how to take care of you and produce excellent results. I am a fully accredited laser eye surgeon and was awarded the "Certification in Refractive Surgery " qualification by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. I have additional postgraduate specialist qualifications in Cataract and Refractive Surgery and I also have a special interest in cataract and intra ocular lens surgery having performed more than 6,000 such procedures. I have written chapters on cataract and laser surgery for many textbooks which are referred to by other surgeons and I have been invited to present scientific papers at more than 20 scientific conferences across the world. And I have been a consultant and advisor to a number of ophthalmic companies and was appointed as a special advisor to NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). And I have supported eye clinics in South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Tanzania and Gambia. More about the Good Shepherd Hospital in Swaziland.
You can always find a surgeon but will you find the right one?
